Love & Basketball

by Lindsey Tederman

Growing up as a Stevens girl, you had to play basketball. And with Johnson in my blood, I was going to do it competitively and with a mouth of a sailor, on the court of course.

Both of my parents were varsity basketball coaches, and my mom was one of the first to play collegiately for women. We spent countless vacations at the Nebraska State Tournaments growing up so it is no wonder I willed my son and his team to their first state basketball appearance in almost a decade.

I’m joking. He did it all after a battle with leukemia for 2.5 years with resiliency and onward thinking that landed his shortened high school career in Lincoln. My mama heart and our family collectively cheered in nervous shouts and a little-too-loud cheers. It’s in his blood, one that failed him for a moment and has also brought him so much success. You did it, son.
